VIETRI's Lastra - Inspired by the Art of Parmesan

One of the most popular stoneware collections at Sallie Home is the Lastra collection from VIETRI. Introduced in 2012, VIETRI's Lastra was the company's foray into stoneware. What makes this dinnerware and serveware collection so popular among our brides is its chic and classic rustic shapes, which bring Old World charm into your kitchen. The stone makeup of Lastra makes it extremely durable and chip-resistant. In addition, Lastra is oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, making it perfect for any modern kitchen. You can use it for all your needs - from baking to serving.

Handcrafted in Tuscany, Italy, the VIETRI - Lastra collection is made by the same artists who create VIETRI's Tuscan solid collections. Lastra means "strap" in Italian, so it shouldn't surprise you that Lastra's rustic design was inspired from the overlapping wooden strap that was used to form Parmesan and other Italian cheeses for centuries. The dusting of brown on the edges of Lastra pieces is a reminder of the ash that artisan cheese makers dusted over the cheese to preserve it.

Italian artisans design the shapes of each Lastra piece, handform and fire them, and then Lastra is hand-glazed in either white or gray. The pieces get fired a second time, and they sent to adorn your dinner table.

A fun fact about Lastra - This is the only VIETRI Dinnerware collection that offers two different sized dinner plates - a European sized Dinner Plate and an American one.

Lastra is available in two colors: Lastra White and Lastra Gray.  Both collections are available at Sallie Home. We keep Lastra in stock, so it will ship out immediately.

    VIETRI's Old St. Nick

Christmas may be over, but at Sallie Home, we never stop celebrating. We just recently added the VIETRI Old St. Nick collection to our website, in anticipation and excitement for bringing in Old St. Nick in September. This is VIETRI's bestselling collection, year after year. It's a collector's item, and our customers love it.

Created by maestro artisan, Alessandro Taddei, the Old St. Nick collection from VIETRI is truly exceptional and lends a festive air to your home during the Christmas season.

We can't help but love the whimsical expressions that Santa has in each individual piece - from the "lazy" Santa, lounging around in his pajamas, to the "hungry" Santa as he munches on Christmas cookies.  All pieces from the Old St. Nick collection are made of terra bianca (white earth or white clay), low fired white. Each portrait of jolly St. Nick is painted directly on the fired surface, so that each brush stroke is seen in beautiful detail. This VIETRI holiday collection is handmade in Tuscany, Italy.  This holiday dinnerware and serveware collection is Dishwasher Safe, and select pieces are oven safe.

Inspired by Alessandro's childhood memories of the stories his beloved mother used to read to him about Babbo Natale (the Italian Father Christmas) when he was a child, the Old St. Nick collection  is fun, creative, and beautiful.

Grainger McKoy: Much More Than A Bird Sculptor

Grainger McKoy knows a little bit about the brilliance of birds. He has made a career as an artist by expressing this brilliance to the public. Through wood carvings, McKoy looks at the beauty of birds, as well as the pursuit of flight. The High Museum of Art in Atlanta currently has an exhibition of Grainger McKoy's sculptures. His exhibition will be at the Atlanta museum through January 8th, 2012.

Grainger Mckoy is first and foremost a sculptor, but by pushing wood carvings to their limit, he has opened a new territory. He has turned his sculptures into a more portable form of art; it has taken the shape of jewelry. Like his sculptures, each jewelery design is of or about a bird, and each starts with a piece of wood and a sharp blade. You can view his collection here, at Sallie home. Whether a waterfowl hunter or just a bird lover, his jewelery is for you. It is simply stunning!

Duck Season: Breast of Wild Duck

You've been duck hunting all morning and now you are driving home, bringing back some birds, and dreaming of a delicious dinner. But first, you'll have clean them before you can turn your ducks into table fare.

After all this cleaning, you just want to be able to cook an easy, but amazing meal. Well here is the recipe for that! Sallie Kramer of Sallie home lets you in on her favorite and easy-to-do recipe that she actually uses for cooking her husband's ducks.

First, you preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Place your skinless and boneless breasts of duck in a skillet, make sure it is an oven-proof skillet. Now, liberally cover the breasts with butter and season with Lawry's Seasoned Salt.

Once the oven is preheated, place the skillet in the oven and broil the duck. After 3 minutes, turn the breast on the other side, broil this side for another 3 minutes. After the 6 minutes of cooking, remove the duck from the skillet, put on a platter and keep it warm. Sallie likes to keep the duck warm by tenting the platter with foil.

Now, pour Sherry into the same skillet that you just removed the duck breasts from. Bring the Sherry to a boil and scrape the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon to remove any off the cooked-on bits. After you do this, ignite the sherry with a match and let the flame burn out on its own. The flame will burn off any left over alcohol.

Carve the duck in diagonal slices - It should be rare (135 degree Fahrenheit).

Spoon the sauce on the plate and place duck slices on top the sauce. Serve right away.

As far as sides go, Sallie says, "wild rice goes with duck like a hand for a glove." For a green, Sallie prefers fresh string beans or asparagus.

A simple and easy meal that we hope you'll enjoy. Happy hunting...

The Year of the Dragon: 2012

Next year, 2012, is the Year of the Dragon. The Dragon is a creature of myth and legend. In ancient China, the celestial Dragon represents an emperor and power. Today, it is the ultimate auspicious symbol signifying success and happiness. Varga Crystal has magnificent dragon-etched stemware, so you can raise a glass next year and rightfully toast to success and happiness. You can fill your whole set with a Double Old Fashion, Champagne Flute, Highball, Water Glass, and Wine Glass. If you aren't into toasting and you would rather celebrate with a delicious meal, take a look at Dragon Constellation by Raynaud China. The beautifully painted dragon candy dishes and jar will make a great gift for the new year. However you choose to celebrate the Year of the Dragon, do it in style. May the celestial Dragon bring good luck to everyone!

    Tea Party

Day after day the temperatures in St. Louis have reached well over 90 degrees. I think my body is now made up of 90% iced tea as I am fighting to beat this heat and stay hydrated. My iced tea concoction of choice is the Arnold Palmer. I'm not a huge fan of sweet teas, so the lemonade sweetens the tea up but not as much as pure sugar. When in a pinch, I'll take a regular iced tea doctored up with a packet of Splenda.

For a party, a shower, or a luncheon, you have to dazzle up your
tea, just like the classic Japanese tea rituals do. To do so, you just need a few fancy flourishes. I like a tall glass, like the Abigail's Water/Iced Tea glass, accompanied with a long, ornate spoon, made long enough to stir the sugar crystals at the bottom. A nice heavy crystal or glass pitcher, such as the William Yeoward's Wisteria Covered Pitcher, is also nice to have on hand for a beautiful iced tea luncheon celebration. The clear vessel allows for a beautiful presentation with mint leaves or fruit.

Here is an extra special tea recipe I like to serve at my luncheons:
6 Bag tea (you can use Liptons or Luzianne)
    2 quarts water
    1/4 cup superfine sugar
    1 cup orange juice
    6 mint sprigs
    1/2 lemon
    1 orange
    cloves

To make this tea: Steep the tea bags in boiling water for three minutes. Chill the tea. Before serving, stir in the sugar, orange juice, and mint sprigs. Pour the tea in your serving pitcher. Slice your lemons and oranges and stick each slice with 3-4 cloves. Add fruit to the top. Voila! a delicious iced tea recipe, that's not overly sweet!

    The Magic Tablecloth

I recently found these wonderful French tablecloths. I call them my Magic Tablecloths. These table linens look just like silk, but they are... shhhhhhhhhh ...polyester! Which means they are machine washable. Did I mention they are perfect for every occasion?

One day it was rather chilly in the shop, but there were my Magic Tablecloths; they were calling to keep me warm!

When I wrapped the tablecloth around my shoulders, ideas for this tablecloth flooded into my head. Are you traveling to Tahitti, Hawaii, Florida, or your pool this summer? Need a cover-up? My magic tablecloths are the perfect thing... Check the internet for many ways to tie them!

Then, after a long day in the store, all I want to do is lie in bed and read. My magic tablecloth is the perfect cover up. Guess who is under it?
    Ava...of course!

    The Newlywed Bed

Often times, brides forget to register for bedding. But isn't this where the magic happens for a newly wed couple? I think this is a big mistake, bedding should definitely be on the registry! Here are some things to think about when registering for bedding:

Style. Two styles merge into one. Will your husband want to sleep under a floral duvet? Start the marriage out with compromising - something you'll need to learn a lot about ;) Pick a style and look that you both will feel comfortable with.

Quantity. You will want to register for at least two sets of sheets (three if you have a guest bedroom). This allows you to have one set in the laundry while the other set is on your bed. This way your bed will never go bare!

Padding. You and your soon-to-be husband deserve to start your life together fresh. Think of adding a feather-bed or mattress pad to your mattress. These products a more comfortable bed for a good night's rest. They can also help to absorb movement - so when he rolls over, he won't wake you! Pillows also make a difference in a restful night, so if you don't have good ones, now is the time.

Quality. Bedding is an investment, with care it should last a long time. So, now is the time to get the good stuff! It would be a shame to have to throw away a gift a guest gave you after just a few short months...

Please keep these things in mind when creating your bridal registry. Sallie home has everything you'll need to start a beautiful life together, register now with just a click!

    Cool off with Percale

We've already had a lot of hot summer nights in St. Louis. Sometimes so hot, it's hard to sleep. But I find with great Percale sheeting, it's easier to have a good nights rest during the summer. Percale isn't a type of fabric, rather, it is the weave of the fabric. Percale is a tightly woven, plain-weave fabric, be it cotton, polyester, a combination of both, etc...

This type of weave makes for a crisp, but soft, texture. What more, it is very light weight and though it has a tight weave, it is still one of the most breathable weaves. It is invigorating to slip under these covers...somehow these sheets always feel cool to the touch. Percales are the perfect sheet for the summer!

Sallie home's favorite percales include, Peacock Alley's Lryric and Calypso; Scandia Home's Classic Natural Percale, and Sferra's Celeste Sheets!
